By most reckoning, the etheric pattern of a virus or bacteria marks it as a
simple organism. This rote alters the structure of the invading microbe. This
changes the resulting disease from something fatal or horribly debilitating to
something mildly annoying but readily treatable with a day or two of rest,
fluids, and perhaps a dose or two of an over-the-counter medication. Each
success rolled reduces the toxicity rating of the disease by two.
