The
Perry Memorial Monument may look like one of the many lighthouses that decorate
the shores of the Great Lakes, but its origin is rooted in more direct warfare
than the battles with the elements that mariners normally faced. Standing tall
and serene on an isthmus of South Bass Island, the Perry Memorial has a
complicated history that intersects several of the wars that beset the nation
during the many years it took to plan and erect the monument.
This is the tallest aid to navigation in the U.S., 75% taller than Cape Hatteras Light. The tower commemorates the 1813 naval victory of a U.S. fleet led by Oliver Perry over a British fleet; it also recognizes the peace that has prevailed between the U.S. and Canada since 1815. An elevator carries visitors to an observation deck 317 ft (96.5 m) above the lake. It flashes a white light at three second intervals from the top of the 352 foot round granite tower topped by a bronze urn. Floodlit at night.
Located
on the northeastern portion of South Bass Island, which is accessible by
ferries from
Catawba Island and Port Clinton. New visitor center opened in May 2002. Site open, tower open daily mid May to
late October. Owner: U.S. National Park Service. Site manager: Perry's
Victory and International Peace Memorial
