One source suggests that Mikkelus may have been seen in the company of what can most politely be described as mercenaries.
Known Associations
Most accounts agree that a Dr. Mikkelus Vagus lectures and demonstrates advanced
medical techniques at the UCLA medical center. Aside from the published class
schedule, however, the exact whereabouts and associations become much harder to
ascertain. They agree that a Dr Vagus works on a rotating basis at satellite
trauma centers throughout the LA area, though may disagree on clinics and times. Reports of him living
at a modest apartment above a tiny cancer treatment center and driving a 20 year
old Volvo seem to conflict with unconfirmed reports of him living in mansions
and driving exotic vehicles.
Other accounts indicate that a Dr. Mikkelus Vagus lectures and demonstrates at the University Hospital in Syracuse, New York's only Level 1 trauma center, and works on a rotating basis at centers throughout the CNY TraumaNet. Times and places where he can be found seem much harder to determine and often conflict with times and locations in New York, California, or both. This seems consistent with the reports which seem to place him at the forefront of disaster relief work in places scattered across the globe, in far more places than any one person can be.
Whether he has a position or serves in an official capacity within the structure of a mercenary/vigilante group called Rage Incorporated has yet to be determined. Unconfirmed sightings may have identified him within the secure compound, or in the company of operatives suspected to be on the Rage payroll. Flight controller logs have indicated that an M800 air ambulance, possibly associated with Mikkelus, was thought to have landed in the vicinity of Rage compounds on at least three occasions. Yet verifiable evidence has yet to be produced, and in the absence of verifiable evidence, only rumors and speculations abound as to where he goes, who he sees, and exactly where his true loyalties lie.
Off-Duty
Mikkelus appears most often as an unremarkable man. A weathered
soul, time and elements have deeply etched the lines in his features and
bleached his hair and beard to a salt-and-pepper mane. Laughter has written
lines around his expressive grey eyes. When traveling the streets of the city on
foot or in a European plated vehicle, he can most often be seen wearing a
comfortably loose-fitting signs of blatant disregard for fashion in a land where
fashion is everything: simple robes, an unmarked light grey flight-suit, or
unadorned fatigue style clothing cinched around his waist by a woven web belt. In
inclement weather, a voluminous cloak or ankle-length poncho billows around him. As he
travels down life's highway, the only certainty is that a steaming mug of some
coffee derivative seldom leaves his hand and amazing things happen in his wake.
Past
Other than the diplomas hanging on the wall from a variety of European schools
of Medicine, Mikkelus offers few clues to his past. While his accent shows
strong Gaelic influence, he carries passports from Svalbard, Lichtenstein, and
Switzerland; his international drivers license was issued in Lichtenstein, his
pilot license,Switzerland. He seldom substantiates or refutes
speculation concerning where he considers home, when or why he left that home,
or even his age. He has no explanation for
the oddly distorted images captured by digital or film cameras pointed his direction
other than "bad picure day". Whether he comes from human stock or something more
exotic, he generally avoids answers to questions concerning
his origins with questions, with riddles, with metaphor, with a kind and silent
smile, or by suggesting that here and now is closest to reality, the most
substantial shadows or illusions at which to grasp.
Present
Mikkelus claims to have come to America from Europe to make a
new start. He's fond of remarking that people tend to be where they need
to be, when they need to be there, though not always when they want to be there.
Few people can say for certain where he goes when he cannot be found socializing
at coffee bars or club, the clinic, or the hospital. Rumors occasionally place him abroad,
working with relief agencies like the International Red Cross and Doctors
without Borders. The provisions of an oath that parallels the spirit of the
Hippocratic Oath in many respects dictate his actions and attitudes.
Future
"Life generally takes people where they need to be, when they need to be there."
