Vixen 21 TD

Manufactured in Pontiac, Michigan between  1986 and 1987, only 376 of these Vixen 21 TD (turbo-diesel) models were ever built before the Vixen Motor Company went out of business. Owing to the reliability and longevity of the BMW turbo-diesel engine, coupled with the the use of readily available standard parts from GM, most of these units are still on the road after 20 years.

The 115hp BMW engine powers the coach through a five speed manual overdrive transmission at speeds up to 85 mph, though the 30mpg mileage rating diminished to about 25 when the accelerator foot hits the firewall; even superior aerodynamics can only do so so much for economy. Still, with the 30 gallon extended-range tank and a 20 gallon capacity of the waste vegetable oil conversion system, it may be fortunate that this unit includes a rest-room on long trips.

Vixen number 290 includes all the comforts of a Class A RV in a vehicle small enough to park in a regular parking space or in the garage:  full galley with 4 cubic foot refrigerator, combination microwave/convection over, working counter space, and double-basin stainless steel sink; the dining area seats four adults and converts to a double bed for sleeping; ample cabinets, cupboards, a closet, and cubbies; the master bedroom suite includes a full-sized permanent double bed and privacy blinds; custom bath with shower; full sound system and environmental control system; on-board high-output power inverter system with solar panels, vehicle power, and external recharging available. When parked, the pneumatic roof can be automatically raised to provide six and a half feet of headroom throughout its length.

In short, the Vixen 21 TD delivers the unique blend of performance, luxury and economy that add up to a new dimension in grand touring.
