At the edge of lawn and beach on end of a long spit of land, contained by the open fire pit and surrounded by three rings of benches, a huge bonfire sends curls of flame skyward. A rough-dressed stone floor some two hundred feet across and a low stone wall around the perimeter of the floor defines the area and provides a permanent firebreak. Judging by visibility from the lake and the apparent age of the stone structure, this may well be an original beacon site from an age predating electronic navigation.
Though no longer necessary to guide lake traffic to safety, the glow of the
fire lends an almost festive occasion to the night. It is easy to picture
gatherings of young and old around such a blaze, sharing timeless stories handed
down through generations in voice and dance and song.
